For the ELT laser projection system, Demcon focal designed a high-precision focal plane assembly that helps condition, monitor and control laser beams used to enhance the performance of the world's largest optical telescope.
About
The Big Science Business Forum is the premier biennial meeting point between Europe's largest research infrastructures and the high-technology industry. This fourth edition comes to Maastricht for the first time, organized jointly by the Netherlands and Belgium. Over 1,200 participants are expected, representing research organizations such as CERN, ESA, ESRF, Fusion for Energy and ESO, alongside the industrial partners who help them realize their most ambitious projects.
Demcon will be present at BSBF 2026 with expertise from across the group, including Demcon high-tech systems, Demcon multiphysics, Demcon focal and Demcon kryoz. We specialize in translating complex, first-of-a-kind requirements into working hardware for exactly the kind of large-scale research programs that define Big Science, from fusion reactors and gravitational wave detectors to synchrotrons and telescope systems.
The challenges we solve
System engineering and integration
We translate the complex, often fluid requirements of first-of-a-kind Big Science projects into working hardware. From initial feasibility and concept design through detailed engineering, realization and testing, we take full responsibility for delivering systems that perform at the limits of physics.Cryogenics and superconductivity
We design cryogenic systems and superconducting magnet assemblies for fusion reactors, particle accelerators and gravitational wave detectors, operating at the boundary of what materials can handle.Radiation-tolerant design
We develop mechanical and electronic systems for high-radiation environments where standard components fail, drawing on experience in nuclear and particle physics applications.Remote handling and automation
We develop remote maintenance systems and automation solutions for environments where direct human access is impossible, including fusion reactor interiors and radioactive handling facilities.Optomechatronics and precision instrumentation
We engineer optomechatronic systems for telescope instruments, laser guide stars and astronomical detectors, combining optical, mechanical and thermal expertise in one integrated design.
Connect with us at BSBF 2026
We are looking forward to connecting with Big Science organizations and industry partners in Maastricht. Are you attending BSBF 2026 or working on engineering challenges for large-scale research infrastructure? Send us a message to set up a meeting in advance or visit us at Booth A023.
Project highlight:
The Extremely Large Telescope in Chile will be the world's largest visible and infrared telescope. To create the artificial guide stars its adaptive optics system relies on, the ELT needs up to eight Laser Projection Systems. Demcon developed the Beam Conditioning and Diagnostics System for this program together with TNO, combining optomechatronic design, thermal engineering, structural analysis and control electronics into one integrated system that performs at the limits of what physics allows.
